A home battery starts with one question: what needs to keep running?

Plan around essential loads, outage expectations and installation details before comparing battery packages.

Define a useful outcome

Before comparing a wall-mounted battery or a bundled solar package, make a list of what you want available during an outage. Lights, refrigeration, communication devices, a garage door and a well pump are different needs. Put essential items at the top and convenience items below them.

If someone depends on powered medical equipment, involve their care provider and equipment supplier in a separate emergency plan. Do not make a household battery the only backup without confirming the equipment's requirements and the reliability of the proposed arrangement.

Ask for a load-based explanation

DOE describes solar storage as a way to save energy for later use, including potential use during an outage. The useful question is what your particular installation will do. Ask the installer which circuits are backed up, how long the estimate assumes they run and what happens when several devices start together.

Request a written scenario rather than a blanket statement that the battery will power the house. Ask what happens overnight, during poor solar production and when the battery begins an outage partially charged. A demonstration of normal operation belongs in the handover.

  • What assumptions support the estimated runtime?
  • Can the system recharge during an outage under the proposed design?

Include the rest of the project

Discuss the equipment location, electrical work, permits, inspection process and maintenance access. Ask who is responsible if the battery and existing solar equipment come from different providers. Clarify whether the quoted scope includes all work needed for backup operation.

Compare warranty terms, service response, monitoring requirements and any recurring fees. If the proposal includes bill savings, ask for the utility rate assumptions separately from the backup-power case. Reliability and bill management can be different goals, and it is easier to choose when those goals are not blended into one sales number.

Have a plan beyond the app

Store owner instructions and support numbers somewhere available during a connectivity problem. Ask which status messages you can safely interpret and which require service. Never open battery enclosures or attempt electrical changes yourself.

Review the plan after adding a large appliance or changing household needs. Confirm the system's limits with a qualified installer before depending on it in an emergency. A well-defined backup plan can be modest and still useful. Knowing exactly which essentials it supports is more valuable than assuming a large-looking installation means the whole house will behave normally through every outage. Keep the agreed list of backed-up circuits with the final installation records.
