Will solar eliminate my utility bill?

Decide what success would look like

Give the installer a specific problem to solve.

A lower bill

Bring the usage history, not only the dollar amount from one month. Ask which charges the proposal expects to reduce and which may remain. Have the installer model the actual utility tariff and your timing of use. A promised percentage means little without knowing the starting assumptions and the costs excluded from the estimate.

Power during an outage

List essential loads such as refrigeration, communications and necessary household equipment. Ask what can run together, for how long and under what weather assumptions. Solar panels alone do not generally provide ordinary outage backup. The design needs suitable equipment and controls, with a clear explanation of which circuits remain powered.

An upcoming change

Tell the designer about an electric vehicle, heat pump, pool equipment or an added living space. Ask for separate scenarios for current and future use instead of accepting a larger system without explanation. Future plans should be explicit assumptions that you can revise, not a sales argument that every household needs maximum capacity.

Understand the pieces of the system

Ask what each component contributes to your goal.

Panels and inverters

Request the panel and inverter models, layout and estimated annual production. Ask how shade, orientation and available roof area were assessed. The proposal should identify what monitoring you receive and what alerts mean. Compare expected production using the same assumptions, since panel count alone does not describe the performance of the whole installation.

Battery storage

Compare usable stored energy with power output and the supported loads. Ask about reserve settings, outage behavior and how the battery operates during normal utility service. A battery designed mainly to shift energy use may have different settings from one held ready for outages. Have the installer explain that tradeoff in household terms.

Efficiency and electrical work

Consider whether lower energy use or an equipment upgrade belongs in the plan before adding more generation. Request separate prices for electrical panel changes, load controls and EV charging. These items may support the project, but they are not interchangeable with solar production. Ask which work is required and which is optional.

Keep the system understandable after installation

The handoff matters as much as the sales presentation.

At project completion

Request the approved design, permits, inspection information, utility authorization where required, warranties and emergency shutdown instructions. Confirm that you can access monitoring under your own account. Ask for a demonstration of normal operation and backup behavior. Keep installer support contacts separate from the financing company’s number so the next question reaches the right place.

A regular review

Check monitoring and utility bills for a change from your normal pattern. Record when an alert began and whether the app or internet connection also changed. Share screenshots without account credentials. Do not climb onto the roof, open electrical enclosures or disconnect equipment to investigate a production issue yourself.

When the home changes

Before roofing work, a battery addition or a sale, gather the contract and equipment records. Ask the relevant provider how the change affects warranties, utility permissions and ownership obligations. Keep service history with the home’s other major systems. Cash, loan, lease and power agreement

Ask who owns the equipment and who is responsible for maintenance. Compare cash price with the total financed cost, fees and payment schedule. For a lease or power purchase agreement, review escalation, transfer, buyout and end-of-term terms. A low starting payment does not explain the long-term commitment.

Ask that provider about current interconnection, export compensation and application requirements.
